Welsh Labour MP for Ogmore, Chris Elmore, has reacted to the news that inflation of everyday food items is running at record highs.

New data from the Office of National Statistics shows that the cost of a loaf of bread is up 18%, pasta is up 27% and milks, eggs and cheese have increased in price by 29%.

The overall headline figure shows that inflation has fallen slightly to 8.7%, above the forecasted 8.1%, still four times the target set for the Bank of England.

In Wales, the Welsh Labour Government has stepped in and given support to those households in need – providing the most generous support package for any part of the UK costing around £380million. The Welsh Labour Government is also committed to the roll-out of universal free school meals for every primary school pupil in Wales by 2024.

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, said:

“Staple foods for feeding a family are going up by between 20 and 30 per cent. Wages across Ogmore have not seen anywhere the same increase meaning pay packets are being stretched further and further.  We are in a cost-of-living crisis – too many people are having to live with hungry bellies and cold homes.

When you add in the increase in mortgage costs as a result of the disastrous Liz Truss budget, runaway energy bills and the increase in taxes as a result of weak economic growth, it’s clear that we are all paying the price for 13 years of failure by this Government.

Imagine how much better off Wales would be with our Welsh Labour Government working hand-in-hand with a UK Labour Government. A Labour Government in Westminster knows the value of investment and tackling inequality. We won’t stand idly by whilst others struggle. We need a General Election now to end the Conservative chaos causing misery for millions.”
