Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has shared his deep concern that the economy continues to worsen under the UK Tory Government’s chaotic rule.

Unemployment statistics released this week show that the number of people claiming unemployment support – this includes those claiming Jobseekers Allowance and Universal Credit and are required to seek work – has increased month-on-month by 3%.

The total number of people now claiming unemployment support in Ogmore now stands at 1,460. This is an increase of 45 people since March 2023.

The statistics for youth unemployment in the constituency paint an equally troubling picture. There has been an 2% increase in the number of young people – people aged 18 – 24 – who are claiming unemployment support between March 2023 and April 2023.

When comparing March 2020 youth unemployment data to this week’s it shows a 5.9% increase.

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, said:

“Our Welsh Labour Government has been working tirelessly to ensure that the worst excesses of the UK Tory Government are avoided in Ogmore, but they can only do so much in the face of overwhelming Conservative chaos. The unemployment figures released this week are a clear example of why we need a UK Labour Government.

Behind every number is a person, family or household that is now struggling to make ends meet. This is only made worse by the fact that the Tories disastrous mini-Budget under Liz Truss crashed the economy. The cost of living crisis was caused in Downing Street and no matter how many times the Conservatives change leader they will never be the solution.

But it doesn’t need to be this way. We have seen what happens when Labour works hard for you. The Welsh Labour Government has implemented Free School Meals across the country, increased support for young people leaving school and invested in local businesses. Imagine what more we could do with a UK Labour Government working in partnership with Wales. Together we can deliver an economy that’s fair, growing and based around local industries.”
