On Wednesday 8th February the President of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky, undertook the rare honour of addressing both Houses of Parliament in Westminster: something previously awarded to Queen Elizabeth II, President Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela and Pope Benedict XVI.

Chris Elmore joined MPs to hear President Zelenskyy’s address, which was received with a standing ovation that lasted many minutes. During the address the President of Ukraine spoke of his gratitude to the people of the United Kingdom for our solidarity and swift action in supporting his people against Putin’s war machine. He then presented both Houses with a signed flight helmet worn by their Ace Fighter Pilot.

Prior to the address Prime Minister’s Questions took place and demonstrated a unity on all sides of the Parliament to support Ukraine. Keir Starmer MP, Labour Leader, said:

“As a country, we have always been at our best when we stand up to tyrannical aggressors threatening their neighbours and peace on our continent. That is why the Labour party helped to found NATO and why our commitment to NATO is as unshakeable today as it was back then.”

Locally, residents in Ogmore have shown the best of British. They have donated vast amounts of medical equipment, money and toys to ensure that the children of war had a spark of light during the darkest of times.

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, said:

“Hearing the inspiring words of President Zelenskyy in the historic halls of Westminster was a moment to remember. Whilst there I was struck to think about everything that people in Ogmore have done to ensure a victory for the Ukrainians. Those small actions have demonstrated the best of British values.

Putin’s Russia has become a stain on humanity. His blatant disregard for human life, international law and another nations sovereignty demonstrates why we must stand strong on the global stage alongside our allies. Labour believes that when Ukraine wins the war started by Vladimir Putin that Russia must pay reparations and all those involved be tried at the International Criminal Court.

The horrors inflicted upon Ukrainians cannot be ignored. Ogmore stands with Ukraine and I will do all I can in Parliament to ensure the UK Government follows where our residents lead.”
