Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, has slammed the UK Conservative Government for a decade of dither, delay and poor regulation of Britain’s energy sector which is hitting families hard.

Chris Elmore has pointed to UK Government failures to meet the vast potential of British renewable and nuclear energy and properly regulate the energy market, leading to rapidly rising prices and dozens of energy companies going bust as millions of consumers are hit with an energy crisis.

To address the immediate crisis, the UK Labour Party have announced plans to bring in fully-funded measures now to reduce the expected price rise in April, saving most households around £200 or more, with targeted extra support to squeezed middle, pensioners and the lowest earners, receiving up to £600 off bills.

This will be paid for with a one-off windfall tax on North Sea Oil and Gas producers who have profited from price rises.

These proposals were put to a vote in Parliament on Tuesday 11 January 2022 but were voted down by Conservative Members of Parliament.  Chris Elmore voted in favour of the cut to people’s energy bills in Ogmore.

Chris Elmore, MP for Ogmore, said:

“Ten years of failed energy policy under UK Conservative Government’s have left prices soaring and families in Ogmore being made to foot the bill for Tory failures.  The energy crisis is now hitting millions, and immediate action is needed to address the impact this is having on working people.

“The Tories are asleep at the wheel, but the Labour Party has a plan to give security for families in the short term by keeping bills down and saving households around £200 or more, with additional support for those who need it.

“But we also need a long-term fix.  Labour plans to keep energy bills lower in the future by reducing Britain’s reliance on imported gas by accelerating home-grown renewables and delivering the green transition we need.  A UK Labour Government would also properly support the Welsh Government in its mission to make homes better insulated and better regulate the energy market to stop energy companies playing fast and loose with the rules.

“Despite the UK Conservative Government voting down Labour’s plans to cut the cost of heating, I will continue to stand up for the families in Ogmore that are unfairly paying the price for Tory failures.”
